Flood Prone Roads Driving Safety & Alerts Remain Prepared Resources
“Flash flooding? I'm in Hillsborough, I'll be fine...”
THE TRUTH:
Hillsborough township is nestled between two waterways, flooding is more prone than you may realize.
Hillsborough starts to flood in low lying areas at three inches of rain, any more than that means road closures township wide.
“My car is tall enough, I can drive through the water…”
THE TRUTH:
It only takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks
“The water does not look deep. I will be fine…”
THE TRUTH:
There is no way to tell how deep water is on a flooded road or way to know how fast the current is moving! Currents can be hidden inches under the surface!
Wide open fields (many in Hillsborough) lead to strong currents which sweep away cars and swamp them easily (flat land is not always fine!)
Ex: Back entrance to Duke Estate has a dip in the land/road which when flooded is deceivingly deep and dangerous . Numerous rescues have been done there yearly
Flooding can cause undetectable damage underneath roads, causing people to drive into pits (Zion Road), holes, or channels carved by strong undercurrents
Disasters Don't Plan Ahead.
YOU Can.
